Elon Musk is NOT Always Right

By his own admission, Elon is not always right. In an October 2021, he said as much to Tesla’s employees.

This goes with the territory for anyone in the start-up world. Startup executives know they don’t know everything. And Elon is being humble about his knowledge gaps. This admission wasn’t even a year ago. So whenever you want to canonize anything Elon says, keep that in mind. Elon isn’t always right.

Takeaways from Elon’s Anti-Remote Work Screed

1. Tesla is Elon’s World – And You Don’t Have to Work There

Elon is smart. He may see something in remote work that doesn’t serve his interests. Fair enough. But he’s also a self-interested CEO who’s aiming for the best interest of his company, Tesla. If you want to believe everything Elon says, go for it. But if you want to think for yourself, consider this:

Elon can run his company how he wants. If you want to work remotely, then Tesla is not the place for you and Elon will not be your boss. There’s only 10,000+ other places to work. So it’s not much of a loss.

2. You Are Your Own CEO

Your company is you and your family’s interests. Not Tesla and not anywhere else. Let the sycophant engineers go work at Tesla so they can put it on their resume and say they’ve worked for Elon. If that’s what’s important to them, have at it.

You should treat your career like you are your own CEO – because you are. Get your 100% remote job or build your own business that is corporate-layoff proof and isn’t subject to the whims of a multi-billionaire’s mood about remote work. You don’t need Elon. The sooner you realize that, the closer you are to work freedom.

3. Remote Work Doesn’t Care About Elon

If you’ve seen the benefits of remote work like many of us have: no commute, make more money, better work-life balance – then don’t let the Elons of the world ruin your day.

Elon is not God. He isn’t thinking about your work-life balance, or your bigger paycheck, or your lower gas bills, or your future. Elon is thinking about Tesla and his interests.

He doesn’t want to acknowledge that 26% of all jobs can be done remotely. He doesn’t want to contribute to the 56% of companies that offer remote work to employees – and growing per ApolloTechnical . Elon may not care for remote work but the growing world of remote work doesn’t care about Elon. The trend is against him.
